History Spotlight on ‘O Day Discovery Lodge

Burdette Park was founded in 1936 and named after Everett Burdette, a World War One Hero who lost his life during his service. Mr. Burdette was the first Vanderburgh resident to have lost his life during the war. Throughout the next decade workers from the WPA began constructing bridges, buildings, and trails over the course 40 acres. (Now over 180 acres). By the mid 1950’s the park had even welcomed a saltwater based swimming facility. The saltwater pool was converted to a standard Olympic size swimming pool in 1961. Burdette Park would go on to feature several attractions throughout the years. These attractions included a roller  rink, mini golf course, and even batting cages. Just like any other recreational venue, Burdette Park continues to change. The park now features a 3.1 mile paved trail that links to the University of Southern Indiana, challenging BMX track,  a full Aquatic Center featuring 4 water slides and spray park, and also several of the areas most desired entertainment venues.  Included in these event destinations is the ‘O Day Discovery Lodge.
